During our exhibition in Barcelona for the Pollux awards, Cheraine Collette made an interview about the Marvels series for FotoNostrum; Mediterranean House of Photography. She talks about the Marvels series but also about her other amazing work.

“Because of humans, animals are being pushed further every day to the outskirts of the earth, losing their homes. The combination with Yoerie Custers’ photographs of abandoned places emphasizes this notion.”

Animals are a source of inspiration and a frequent subject that serves as a common theme to connect her works. Her aesthetic combines fashion with nature, animals and art. Through the use of photo manipulation, she aims to create a world where the audience will find themselves between fantasy and reality. Cheraine Collette says, “Get inspired to explore your imagination and create works you never thought possible.”

Our surreal images won the Fine Art award in the International Photography Contest 2019.

Two years ago I met Yoerie Custers by chance and while we started talking I found out he was a photographer too. His biggest passion is going to abandoned places throughout Europe, to photograph the decayed beauty of neglected buildings. He also showed me his book ‘Journey to Forgotten Dreams’ containing his best works and an idea was born”. Cheraine Collette

‘Marvels’ photo series was made as a collaboration between Yoerie Custers Cheraine Collette. Custers is responsible for the photography of the decor of uninhabited places, and Collette did Photoshop magic, photographs of the animals and post-production. The idea was born when two artists met two years ago and found out about each other’s inspirations and passion. Read more about these two marvelous photographers and their projects.

For eight years now, Yoerie Custers (26) from southern Limburg has been travelling through Europe to photograph abandoned and dilapidated buildings. The result of his risky expeditions can be seen in the book ‘Secrets of Neglected Places’, which is now available at bookstores and online.

First, a word of warning. From the photographer himself. Once you start photographing abandoned buildings and hard-to-reach places, it’s addictive. “You climb over a wall or through a window and then comes the wow effect. You suddenly step into someone else’s world. That is addictive: you want to discover new ‘old’ places and find out the stories behind them all the time,” says the photographer, who was born in Maastricht and grew up in Cadier en Keer.

Time travel with photography
Unique Urbex photo exhibition on display at Hotel Bergse Bossen

From April to October, Hotel Bergse Bossen is filled with special photographs by Urbex photographers Sasja Michalski and Yoerie Custers. The exhibition on the Traaij 299 in Driebergen is accessible free of charge every day. Intriguing photos of desolate, dilapidated castles, hospitals, prisons, churches, factories and houses, from Belgium to Chernobyl.
Once people lived or worked in these buildings, music was played, they laughed and cried. Now there is a deserted, mystical atmosphere and nature is gaining ground.
Sasja and Yoerie’s photos almost ‘suck’ you inside and make you curious about those other times. They show a world that would otherwise have remained hidden.

Discovering abandoned places. It has been his biggest hobby for as long as Yoerie Custers (26) from Groesbeek can remember. “I am curious. What is there to see, what happened there?”

When he was young, he was more cautious. His parents did not always like it when their son went on an adventure. Once an adult, Custers, who studied interior design and now works in a bedstore, bought his first Nikon camera. Now he is looking more for the boundaries. The past three years he travelled through Europe to photograph places where time has stood still. This resulted in the book ‘Secrets of Neglected Places’.

De Rozet #3 & Het Gemeentenieuws #6

Yoerie Custers from Groesbeek has been travelling around Europe for a number of years, looking for empty and dilapidated places. Searching for forgotten buildings that nobody cares about anymore. Bizarre, beautiful and often very exciting. A building with a whole story that is a secret. What happened here? Why was it closed down? Why did they just leave? Questions that will not be answered and that you can philosophise about yourself. Yoerie has collected a number of impressive photos in the 200-page coffee table book ‘Secrets of Neglected places’. Besides the beautiful photos, it also contains some poetry pieces that take you on a revolutionary journey through the past and decay. The book comes out March the 1st and is available at various shops in the area or on the internet.

APL Fotomagazine #20

“I want to show people how wonderful decay can be. Artistic trends that are reflected in the old architecture as we rarely see them again in contemporary construction. History of buildings with a true story and the small houses where people have lived for a long time. I would like to share all these beautiful locations with you through photography.”

Abandoned and dilapidated buildings, where time seems to have stood still. Living rooms that, due to the presence of furniture and other household effects, suggest that someone had lived there only yesterday. A thick layer of dust, however, betrays the fact that no one has set foot here for a long time. Capturing this kind of past glory is the dream of Urbex (Urban Exploring) photographers.
